Well I thought I might start off with the features that wont be available in the Watch Fit 2. That way if you were looking for a certain feature, you wont be disappointed.

1. Cadence

If you are not familiar with swimming cadence, it’s basically a average count of arm strokes per minute. A very key metric when improving your swimming ability. All though the new Watch Fit 2 has the New Huawei Trusport, which can track your running motion using the Running Ability index program. The Watch Fit 2 cannot track your arm motion during swimming. In saying that the watch does have a built in accelerometer and gyroscope to track your movement. Even with these 2 sensors you can get a reasonably accurate data. But unfortunately that is not on offer.

2. In Depth Swimming Metrics

Im talking about metrics like lap counts, SWOLF etc. to view and review to improve your swimming ability. Looking at the Huawei Health App, there isn’t much to compare. In comparison to the Garmin Connect or The Polar Flow applications they offer so much more in analytics to improve your swimming ability. Does this matter? not at all, It really comes down to what you are comfortable in reviewing and what you are looking to get out of your swimming session.

3. Various Swimming Profiles

Having it’s own unique swimming profile would be better than just a generic one. No matter what fitness tracker you have, being able to review your data and analytics is the key to improving. And with that comes the ability to change and update your swimming profile as you see fit.

Well in a Nutshell the Huawei Watch Fit 2 can only offer 2 workout modes which is pool swim and open water swim, which can be activated in the various workout modes. Nothing too flash but just 2 workout profiles to track your swimming workouts. The type of metrics that the Watch Fit 2 can offer is the following.

To be honest from a swim workout metrics perspective this is great. All of the metrics that are on offer are more commonly used with a basic fitness tracker. However the heart rate zones is a metric that I personally pay attention to.

There are a few benefits that I have found with training with heart rate zones. The first benefit is that you can better understand what level of intensity you are working at. This is important as you can make sure that you are not overtraining or undertraining. The second benefit is that you can see the progress that you are making. If you are consistently training in the same heart rate zone then over time you will be able to see your fitness improving as you will be able to swim for longer at that intensity.

This is a reflection of your training load. Which is my favourite feature on the Huawei Watch Fit 2. It’s always about maintaining a balance and training smarter progressively. This would be helpful to a beginner who has never been through a training program before.

Is The Heart Rate Tracking Accurate During Swimming?

Unfortunately it’s reasonably accurate, and to be fair many smart watch and fitness tracker manufacturers find it hard to track. It doesn’t matter if you have the most expensive smart watch in the market, tracking your heart rate is a challenge when swimming. The challenge is that the watch is under constant dynamic pressure which means that the watch is moving around under water. All of this static movement can be very difficult for the sensors to get a read on your heart rate variation, which is why I say it is reasonably accurate. There are smart watch’s on the Market Like the Polar Pacer that has a triple sensor fusion. Which basically means 3 powerful sensors combined to authenticate your heart rate variation accuracy. But still claim that the heart rate variation is reasonably accurate.

Anyway because the heart rate tracking is reasonably accurate, there is only one other feature that it will effect, which is your training load. The training load feature uses your heart rate variation to get a gauge of how much stress your body is currently undertaking. So please be aware of this when you do a lot of swimming workouts in short succession.

What Shouldn’t You Do When Using Your Watch To Track A Swim Workout

Although the Huawei Watch Fit 2 is reasonably water resistant there is a few things you shouldn’t do during a swimming workout.

  • Touch the side Button under Water : If you touch the side button while under water, moister can enter into the electrical housing. It may not happen right away, however if you consistently do this eventually moisture will enter the watch.
  • Do not Touch The Screen : Any slight pressure on the screen will allow moisture to enter the watch. It may not happen at first, but if you consistently do this moisture will enter the watch.
  • Avoid Any Heavy Contact Under Water : Just be aware of your surroundings when you are swimming. If you watch comes into contact with something solid like a pool ladder of side drain, the watch can potentially deform. One the watch is slightly deformed moisture can enter the watch.
  • Doing Swim Workout’s In Hot Pool’s : This should be avoided due to thermal expansion. The thing is when it comes to thermal expansion, the watch needs time to heat up. As the material heats up thermal expansion occurs which will then potentially allow moisture to enter the watch.
