Xiaomi S1 Active : Workout Mode Ability Is Very Good
When it comes to tracking your workouts, the Xiaomi S1 Active has a whopping 100 built-in workout modes that you can use to meticulously track your progress. However, the S1 Active is far more versatile than just being a workout tracker, and I will be assessing its capability to track workouts.
If you are not familiar with the term workout mode ability, it’s a rating system that I have created that enables you to see the value that the S1 Active can provide when it comes to tracking your workouts.
After reading numerous articles that praise the S1 Active as a quality fitness tracker, I must express my dissenting opinion. Through my testing system, I have found that the device is merely average. So, without further ado, let me present the results of my testing
Criteria | Result |
Speciality | Well rounded |
Basic Level | 5/5 |
Intermediate Level | 1/5 |
Advanced Level | 0/5 |
Final Score | 6/15 |
There you have it, the Xiaomi S1 Active gets a rating of a 6 out of 15. To be honest I was expecting a higher score as many articles have praised the device for its fitness tracking ability, but I did not find the device to be as good as I was expecting and it deserves it’s rating of 9 out of 15.
In this article, I will go into great detail about all of the testing results so that you can get a better understanding of how I arrived at my final score. Additionally, I will provide some insight into what’s currently available on the market, as this is how I developed my testing system. Lastly, you will see how the S1 Active stacks up against other fitness trackers in its class.
S1 Active Provides Everything At Basic Level : 5 out of 5
When it comes to basic level fitness tracking, the S1 Active has done very well. To gain a point when testing, each feature must perform reliably. I have tracked multiple workouts over the week and it deserves its 5 out of 5 rating for basic fitness level tracking. Before I continue let me share with you what I test at a basic level.
- Calorie counting
- Have various workout modes available to track (100 modes available)
- Heartrate tracking
- Step counting
- Duration of workout
- Heart rate variation recording
- Ability to connect to third party apps (directly or indirectly)
- Auto detection workout.
The only issue I had when tracking at basic level was cycling through the workout modes and finding the right one to track. Having 100 different workout modes has it’s disadvantages so make sure you take the time to arrange your workout modes in order of highest frequency. If you dont, you will be standing for a while sifting through the many workout modes when you are trying to find one. Keep that in mind before you begin your workout.
S1 Active Provides Some Intermediate Features : 1 out of 5
At intermediate level tracking the S1 Active has only one feature at this level, and I normally test the watch for six features. Before I go into detail, here is the criteria that I test for at intermediate level, including the number of features that’s not available to the S1 Active.
Available | Unavailable |
GPS Tracking | Ability to measure training load/intensity |
Ability to improve cadence
AI coach feature | |
Ability to provide recovery times
Ability to determine your fitness level |
Since there is only one feature to test at intermediate level, is the S1 Active reliable when it comes to GPS tracked workouts? yes it’s reasonable accurate so it definitely deserves it’s rating of 1 out of 5 at this level. Getting a connection is very quick and with the built in dual band frequency, it’s accuracy is improved. I will be doing a full article on the devices GPS accuracy, so far the test’s that I have done so far are very good.
S1 Active Does Not Offer Any Advanced Features : 0 out of 5
Unfortunately when it comes to advanced level tracking the S1 Active does not offer any features at this level. Here is a list of things that I test for at advanced level.
- Ability to connect to motion sensors
- Ability to prepare you for a race
- Ability to provide advanced analytics (similar to Polar flow, Garmin Connect)
- Ability to provide specialist features to improve performance
- Advanced auto detection (automatically change workout modes based on your motion)
A lot of these features are in devices that specialise in Multi sport. Lately there are devices that dont specialise multi sport and have these features and do really well. This testing criteria will likely grow as technology improves, but it goes to show how advanced some the devices are in the market today.
How Does The S1 Active Rank In The Market.
In terms of ranking, the S1 Active has a reasonable score of 6 out of 15, however in comparison to what’s out there in the market the S1 active sit’s at the bottom of the table. Here is my final scores in comparison to other devices I have recently tested.
Rank | Brand | Watch Series | Specialty | Score |
1 | Garmin | Forerunner 55 | Multi Sport | 15 |
2 | Polar | Pacer | Multi Sport | 15 |
3 | Apple | Watch 7, 8 Ultra | Well Rounded | 15 |
4 | Polar | Ignite 3 | Fitness | 15 |
5 | Huawei | GT3 PRO | Well Rounded | 13 |
6 | Huawei | GT3 | Well Rounded | 12 |
7 | Huawei | Watch Fit 2 | Well Rounded | 12 |
8 | Huawei | Band 7 | Well Rounded | 9 |
9 | Samsung | Galaxy Watch 6 Classic | Smart apps | 8 |
10 | Samsung | Galaxy Watch 4, 5, 5 Pro | Smart apps | 8 |
11 | Fitbit | Versa 4, Charge 5, Inspire 3 | Health | 7 |
12 | Xiaomi | S1 Active | Smart apps | 6 |
Devices that have a very high score are typically your multi sport devices, or devices that specialise in tracking your workouts or improve performance. On the other hand if the overall score is fairly low, then the device is really a basic fitness tracker. At the moment the S1 Active is indeed a basic fitness tracker with some intermediate features.
A basic fitness tracker still has it’s place in the market, and after testing the watch for a while, I think it will serve it’s purpose to anyone that wants a basic fitness tracker. The design is simplistic (very similar to Fitbit) and is very easy to use and operate with a very large screen.
Final Conclusion
Thank you so much for reading and I hope you have learnt a lot about the S1 active’s ability to track workout’s. To be honest I was expecting a higher score, because I have seen people rate the device very high across the internet, when in reality it’s a basic fitness tracker at best.
If you have seen where the X1 Active ranks against other devices, it’s workout ability is lower than the Fitbit devices, which tells you a lot, otherwise my overall experience using the S1 Active has been very good. It has a very large screen, and so simple to use. It’s GPS tracking I found has been very reliable and has consistently produced good tracking results, so I will provide a GPS accuracy test in the coming days.
In the end I believe the S1 Active deserves it’s rating of 6 out of 15. It did the basics very well and provided accurate results when you are using GPS tracking workouts. If you are someone who is after a basic fitness tracker, the S1 Active can be a good option for you. Since the Fitbit Inspire 3 is ranked higher than the S1 Active, Im more inclined to refer you to the Inspire 3. Once again thank you so much for reading.
