Huawei GT3 PRO : Is The GPS Tracking Accurate?

If GPS tracking accuracy is important to you and you are not sure if the Huawei GT3 PRO would do the job, then this article is definelty for you. After conducting three different test’s I have finally come to the conclusion that the Huawei GT3 PRO GPS accuracy is reasonably accurate. Here are the final results

GPS DifficultyRatingComments
Easy Level5/5Excellent precision
Hard Level1/5Not good
Very Hard Level4/5Very good precision

As you can see the Huawei GT3 PRO performed exceptionally well during the easy, and very hard level test’s, but didn’t do too well in the hard level test. In facet all the devices that I have tested have achieved the same number, including the best devices that I have tested.

I will explain how I rate a device for each category, which will be very useful for you to know. I will also provide a ranking system based on the devices that I have tested, which will give you an idea how the device compares to other smart watch brands.

What Location Sensors Does The Huawei GT3 PRO Have

When it comes to the number of location sensors, The Huawei GT3 PRO is no different to the Huawei GT3 Active or the Huawei Watch GT Runner, so right of the bat I know that the device should perform the same as the other devices I have mentioned. Here is a list of satellite systems that the Huawei GT3 PRO can connect to.

  • GPS Navigation (American satellite)
  • GNOLASS Navigation (Russian satellite)
  • Galileo Navigation (European satellite)
  • BeiDou Navigation (Chinese satellite)
  • QZSS Navigation (Japanese satellite)
  • Dual bad frequency

The more satellites you can connect to the better the accuracy and also the speed of connectivity. However that’s not always the case, since my second test has exposed some flaws about GPS accuracy, but if you stick within some certain guide lines you can achieve very good accuracy, which I will detail in my test results.

I also want to acknowledge that, my location plays a part in my final results. Because I am based in New Zealand, I wont be able to gain access to the BeiDou or QZSS satellites, because those satellites systems do not cover the Australasian part of the world. So technically my results are based off three satellite systems with dual band frequency.

How Do I go About Measuring GPS Accuracy

My rating system is a little crude, but my hope is to provide the point of difference to you if the device meets your expectations before you buy. The table below is the guidelines that I follow to test the GPS accuracy.

Minor mis alignments is where the devices tracking route versus the planned route is out by up to 3 meter’s (10FT) whereas a major mis alignment is anything beyond 3 meter’s or 10FT.

GPS Accuracy Rating System

No of StarsDescriptionComments
5Zero mis alignments, no errorsExcellent precision, no errors, tracks correctly
4Up to 3 minor mis alignmentsVery good precision, some minor errors
34 – 5 minor mis alignmentsAverage precision
26 or more minor mis alignmentsBelow average precision
11 Major mis alignmentNot good,
0More than 1 major mis alignmentWay off

Easy Test : Huawei GT3 PRO scores a Perfect Score

In the easy level test, I like to conduct a test where there is no obstacles that could impact the GPS accuracy of the device. In this test, I have simulated a situation where someone is going for a jog or walk around the block and provide results on what that would look like for you.

As a result, the test performed really well as expected. If you plan a similar route, you could also achieve the same level of accuracy. I have provided an image with an over lay, the devices tracking versus the planned route and you can see that it overlaps with 100% agreement.

Hard Test : Huawei GT3 PRO achieved a 1 out of 5 Rating

The second test I do, is where 80% of the planned route that I take is by tall buildings. To be fair, all the devices that I have tested have achieved the same result as the Huawei GT3 PRO.

Tall buildings is a big obstacle especially if you walk beside them. I also want to point out that the tallest building through this planned route is only two stories high.

Digital interference can impact GPS accuracy so I did the test in the early hours of the morning, where there is no people and no stores open, versus peak times where the town was very busy. The results showed that they were almost identical, including the major mis alignment in the same spot.

So just be aware that if your planned route has a cluster of tall buildings like in the example test that I have done. There is a chance that you will achieve the same GPS accuracy result. When the device loses your location, it can quickly recover, which is one of the advantages of having dual band frequency.

Very Hard Test : Huawei GT3 PRO achieved a 4 out of 5

In the third test, is where 80% of the planned route is under dense vegetation, very similar to someone who likes to walk outdoors in the woods. Dense vegetation can be an obstacle when it comes to GPS accuracy, and as a rule of thumb, it is better to have a clear view of the sky above you to get accurate results.

However, after reflecting on my test results, dense vegetation does not affect the GPS accuracy at all for the Huawei GT3 PRO. You could say that dense vegetation is a low level obstruction, because it nearly matched the planned route.

How Does The Huawei GT3 PRO ranks in the Market

When it comes to GPS tracking accuracy, the Huawei GT3 PRO did really well and ranks as one of my top devices that I have tested so far. If you were to compare the results of my top four devices, the Xiaomi S1 Active would be the most affordable.

In New Zealand dollars I paid around $200NZD, which is 75% less that what I paid for the Huawei GT3 PRO. Which goes to show that some of the affordable devices can match the accuracy of the more high end devices like the Huawei GT3 PRO.

The Xiaomi S1 Active is a great alternative if you do a lot of GPS tracking, but please read my articles first before you decide to buy because it does have some flaws that you need to be aware of.

Final Conclusion

Thank you so much for reading and I hope you have learnt a lot about the GPS accuracy of the Huawei GT3 PRO. Based on my testing results, the device achieved a 10 out of 15 score, which is about par to all of the best devices that I have tested to date.

If you plan your route similar to the easy test I did, the Huawei GT3 PRO is more than capable of providing accurate results. Whether you are cycling on the open road or jogging around the block, the GPS tracking is very reliable. The houses along my block are very similar in height to the town buildings. Which is not very tall at all considering your town area may have a building that is 50 stores high.

Only difference is, in the easy test the home is about 10m (60FT) away, where as the town buildings was at least 2m (6FT) away, whether that is the difference maker, it’s inconclusive to say after these test results. Then again if all the devices consistently fail in this test for the same reason, then it maybe something to be aware of when you planning your route through a township.

As for the very hard test, dense vegetation does not impact the GPS accuracy that much. Reflecting back on my testing results, every device that I have tested has failed at the same spot. The area where the error was located does not have any obstructions or tall tree’s. I wondered if the sharp elevation played a part, because their is a big elevation difference when I begin to hike through the woods.

Thank you so much for reading and I hope this article has answered any questions you have about the Huawei GT3 PRO GPS accuracy. It is ranked one of the top devices that I have tested, based on my own testing systems.
